About TroutTrack
TroutTrack is a free web app built for fly fishermen and river anglers across the United States who need to know when it's wadeable conditions below hydroelectric dams. Hydroelectric dams can begin releasing water with little warning, turning a calm, wadeable river into a dangerous torrent in minutes. Water levels can rise several feet in under an hour, and anglers caught unaware can be swept downstream.
TroutTrack solves this problem by translating complex generation data from multiple federal agencies — including the Southwestern Power Administration (SWPA), the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the Bureau of Reclamation — into a simple, color-coded status. Green means the dam is off or at low flow. Orange means it's generating. Red means high flow or spilling. Instead of digging through megawatt and cubic- feet-per-second numbers, you get an instant answer. Instead of digging through megawatt and cubic- feet-per-second numbers, you get an instant answer.
The app tracks over 180 hydroelectric dams across 115+ rivers nationwide, providing real-time generation schedules, current release rates, downstream river gauge readings, water temperature, and rising or falling trends. Each dam page includes a 7-day generation outlook, weather forecasts, and predicted water arrival times at downstream fishing access points. The system continuously pulls live data from USGS, NOAA, and USACE gauge networks to keep conditions up to date.
TroutTrack is built by a small team of anglers and developers who fish these same tailwaters and wanted a faster, simpler way to check conditions before heading out. The app is mobile-first, free to use, and continuously improved as new gauge data and dam schedules become available from federal sources. Whether you're fishing the White River below Bull Shoals, the Little Red below Greers Ferry, the Clinch below Norris, or the Colorado below Glen Canyon, TroutTrack helps you fish with confidence.
